This book was so so different than her debut Homegoing (which I loved) and perhaps even more remarkable for it, delving into immigration, faith, race, mental health, and addiction, all with her trademark lucidity and grace. Gyasi is hands down one of my favorite authors of this time, perhaps ever. But what if the answer to this question is “I don’t know” or worse still, “Nothing”? In Brief: When the answer to this question is “Because God deemed it so” one might feel comforted. Our curiosity around this issue has sparked everything from science to literature to philosophy to religion. “What’s the point of all of this?” is a question that separates humans from other animals.

EastmanYoung children will find this story fun because of its predictable nature. Although this may not have been the author's intention, it is nice to see a nontraditional family portrayed. I can easily relate to this coming from a single parent household. The story focuses on the mother and child relationship. For example, the plane looks like it has eyes and the baby bird looks like its caught in the bulldozer's mouth. Even the inanimate objects, such as the plane and bulldozer, have almost human faces. Since the characters are the story's focus, the setting is a nondescript rural area. When the baby bird finally sees his mother, he is certain of who she is and states with confidence "you are my mother." The story is about having a sense of where you belong, and children can relate to the fear of being lost. Despite the limited vocabulary, the story is interesting, and the illustrations reflect the baby bird's emotions well, his determination, frustration, fear, and finally contentment in finding his mother. This book is an easy reader, so the vocabulary is purposely limited. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Wanted by Kristen StrasselI just got a message from Sarah-the babysitter. “It’s my goal to have a good enough relationship with the pack that I’m not causing her danger.”Ī door slamming closed startled us both. “I’d like to think I won’t have to shift to keep her safe,” Logan said. “If you never shift again, how will you protect her?” No surprise that came from Bjorn. I want them to feel free to be whoever they want to be, and not give a fuck what anyone else thinks, because they have all the support they need from the people who matter.” His words were tipped with a growl. I want her and the kids to feel safe and loved. “It means treating Cindy like a queen, but I know this isn’t make-believe. I loved that they all sent over a little something. “What does having a mate mean to you?” Marissa’s question. I hope that we can agree on what that is.” “We might come from different worlds, but we can agree on one thing-we want the best for Cindy. “I have a lot to prove to those wolves,” Logan said. “How do you see yourself fitting into everyday life with Cindy’s pack?” That was Hugo’s question. And maybe everything was happening for a reason, and it was all going to work out.” And when she picked me, it felt like validation. Best Car Loans in Canada: A Comparison of Rates, Terms, and Financing 6/11/2023 0 Comments Atonement by Kirsten BeyerThough I didn't feel as blown away by the book as I was by Full Circle and The Eternal Tide, this was (as all Kirsten's novels are) some of the best Treklit there is. I was very grateful for the direction her story went in. It's very good that the fleet is finally in his hands.Īnother thing I want to mention is how at the start of the book, and even before I started reading it, I was afraid Tom's mom was going to commit suicide. It was funny and at the same time made me realize again how great a leader Akaar is. Akaar's meeting with Icheb was another highlight. Kirsten really gets their relationship and I love the direction she has taken both characters in this series. B'Elanna's joke about Harry only being first officer for a few more hours made me laugh out loud. Tom and B'Ellanna's reunion was very well written. Then the rest of the highlights of the book for me were in the final few chapters. What a great character and a great leader. What a ballsy move! Seeing Bacco again and watching her set everything to rights was amazing too. When I realized that Tom was taking his troubles directly to the Federation President, exactly like he threatened the Starfleet Medical people he would do in the previous novel, it just made my day. There were four moments that really made me smile and that was really enough to make the book very worthwhile for me. I just finished this book and wanted to give my few thoughts before I read through this whole thread. Oxford: Oxford University Press.ĭavison, CM. Dacre’s tale therefore ultimately functions as a caution against the woman’s emancipated and agential actions.īurke, E. I conclude by proposing that Dacre’s interracial sublime serves the purpose of demonstrating the permeability of European borders - a permeability that wreaks disaster. In the final section I trace the features of the interracial sublime. The arrival of the Moor within the house compounds the blurring of hierarchies and ordering. In section two I suggest that within the dissolving home/family we see the European woman, Victoria, subverting further the dissolution. In the first section it examines the crisis of European domesticity where the family and the parent/s fail in their responsibilities toward the children. Dacre, I suggest, traces this dissolution to the European woman’s assertion of agency by stepping outside spatial, familial, racial and sexual boundaries. This essay argues that Charlotte Dacre’s Zofloya (1806) presents an interracial sublime in the form of the dissolution of the European home/family. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Alice clayton cocktail seriesIn a delicious mix of silly and steamy, Alice Clayton dishes out a hot and hilarious tale of exasperation at first sight. Suddenly, Caroline is finding she may have discovered a whole new definition of neighborly. The tension between them is as thick as the walls are thin, and the results just as mixed. So when the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed "dating hiatus," and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. Thanks to paper-thin walls and the guy's athletic prowess, she can hear not just his bed banging against the wall but the ecstatic response of what seems (as loud night after loud night goes by) like an endless parade of women. The first night after Caroline moves into her fantastic new San Francisco apartment, she realizes she's gaining an-um-intimate knowledge of her new neighbor's nocturnal adventures. NEW YORK TIMES, WALL STREET JOURNAL & USA TODAY bestselling indie author Alice Clayton delights readers with the sexy, laugh-out-loud romance of Caroline and Simon in Wallbanger, the first book in the Cocktail series! 6/11/2023 0 Comments Aa milne booksChristopher Robin starred in his own film, portrayed by Ewan McGregor as an adult and Orton O'Brien a child (2018). Christopher Robin has had many voice actors over the years including Bruce Reitherman (1965–1966), Robie Lester ( A Happy Birthday Party with Winnie the Pooh), Jon Walmsley (1967–1968), Ginny Tyler ( Disneyland Records), Timothy Turner (1974), Kim Christianson (1983), Tim Hoskins (1988–1991), Edan Gross (1991), Brady Bluhm (1997–1999), Tom Attenborough (2000), Tom Wheatley (2003), William Green (2002), Paul Tiesler (2001–2003), Struan Erlenborn (2007–2010), Jack Boulter (2011), and Oliver Bell (2017). As in the books, he is best friends with both Piglet and Pooh, and he and Pooh always do nothing together. In the Disney adaptations, he is 10 years old and only goes to day school. In the final chapter, Christopher Robin leaves his stuffed animals behind and asks Pooh to understand and to always remember him. Some chapters in The House at Pooh Corner cover Christopher Robin beginning to go to school and his increasing book-learning. Pooh considers both Christopher Robin and Piglet to be his best friends.Ĭhristopher Robin matures considerably over the course of the books. Despite being a child, he is much wiser and more mature than many of the other characters. The primary human character in the books, he has a "cheerful" and compassionate personality and is someone whom Pooh and the others look up to. is a grand, kaleidoscopic portrait of a nation, buzzing with history and life on every page. Offering a reader a glimpse inside the mind of a character was not something authors had focused on before. It gives France Burney the chance to show the private reactions, thoughts and feelings of her characters. It’s worth noting that this was a brand new technique when Burney was writing. I first read this when I was about 16 and I immediately loved the simplicity of the style. I was intrigued by the way Frances Burney uses the epistolary style (a series of letters). I think it’s the sign of a really great book that, despite the vast choice in the bookshops, you choose to come back to it again, and again.Įvelina by Frances Burney is one of those books for me. It often results in much frustration as the reader struggles to get into any book she picks up! I’m back online track now though and it’s all thanks to Evelina by Frances Burney. Like writers block, this can strike at any time. I have been suffering from an ailment I’m going to term ‘reader’s block’. Her style transports you into the late eighteenth century society as it follow to progress of the eponymous heroine, Evelina. In fact, Frances Burney provided the inspiration for Pride and Prejudice. Evelina by Frances Burney, written by one of Jane Austen’s favourite authors should be on your reading list. |
